Western art - Call of The Wild II

Call of the Wild
20" X 16" oil on canvas  Copyright 2008
Above is a new oil I have just completed - doing something I have never done before. I repainted over a previous oil painting that did not suit me! It will likely take this painting at least five months to dry completely.

I hope you like my new version of Call of the Wild. This painting originally came to mind when I heard there had been wolf sightings in Colorado. Wolves have long been hunted out of the state and surrounding areas. But several years ago they were re-introduced into Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Over four hundred miles to the North. They are drifting our way. Some people are glad, some not. The ranchers and farmers in their way will likely rebel if wolves attack their livestock. But there is enough wildlife in the great Rocky Mountains to keep wolves well fed, even in winter. Hopefully, they will keep to the high Rockies and away  from human occupied territory.

The coloring in the painting is simply a different tack for me - some way to outline the exuberant howl of this prince of the timber, and dramatize the wild, windy night.

Wolves are social creatures and do not like being alone. This could be a young bachelor kicked out of a pack or possibly the head wolf calling out in pleasure of a cold crisp night. A ground blizzard blows, whipping the ground snow into a frenzy of waves and whirling color.
Thank you for stopping by to see my wild wonderful wolf!  Millie Carrée
